Standing Room Only — June 9th, 2011
Hello Movie Fans- If you caught the show last week you heard me announce that after about seven years on the air, I have decided to end Standing Room Only after the June 9th episode. It was a hard decision and one that I did not make lightly. There is no great controversy involved; it comes down to an issue of time. When you add up all of the time it takes to write the show, maintain the website, travel to and from Newark to do the show, and see all of the theatrical movies for the week, the results is about 15-18 hours per week. That’s a lot, and I’ve done it this way for years with no regrets. I know I could cut down on the time required by not seeing as many movies in the theater, or airing re-runs from time to time, skipping Final Thoughts every few weeks and so on, but I do not feel that is indicative of the quality that I expect from myself, and listeners expect of the show. In many ways I consider myself a bit of an “all or nothing” type of person, and in this instance I think that applies.
I have had an incredible time doing the show over the years, and I am happy that I have been able to carry on with it through a variety of different circumstances including college, a couple of different jobs, a bad bout of laryngitis, bad weather, transportation issues and the myriad of other things that occur during the natural flow of one’s life. I feel proud of the show, and I can confidently say that while it wasn’t perfect, I applied 100% of my effort, creativity and movie knowledge to it each and every week. Perhaps it’s like that cliché which athletes use when they say you should never leave anything on the field. I intend to apply this same dedication to a couple of new pursuits as I open up the first non-Movieguy chapter of my life. I’ve been painting for a couple of years now and have sold some of my work, and would like to dedicate more time and energy to this. Writing has always been a big part of my life, and I have ideas for full length works that I’d like to pursue as well.
I want to thank all of the co-hosts who lent their voices, personalities and knowledge to the show over the years. I always enjoyed meeting these new people who were brought together by their love and passion for movies. The staff of WVUD also deserves a big thank you, because they have been enthusiastic supporters of the show for the entire time I’ve been there. They have helped me in every way they possibly could, and their support has made the show possible. The good people at Regal Cinemas and California Video have provided me with years of movies and promotional support, and it has been a pleasure working with them.
There is more on the way, so keep checking back regarding the future of the website, DVD reviews, what is to come on the show for the final two episodes and a whole lot more.
Until then, as always, Happy Viewing!
